So much design, planning, and strategy go into executing a flawless bathroom remodeling project. From choosing quality building materials that will add a subtle luxurious touch, to hiring the right professionals who can get the job done, you’d want to make sure that your budget is spent wisely. Here are four expensive mistakes to steer clear of during a bathroom remodeling in Menifee, CA.

Lack of Planning

“Plan to fail… By failing to plan…” This old saying resonates because, without a detailed plan, a bathroom remodeling project will never come to fruition. Always ensure to get the assistance of a veteran contractor with the experience who can give you a clear plan depending on your building requirements. Make sure to consider everything from renovations, plumbing, electrical, and similar aspects while making the plan.

Switching Fixtures

Choosing to move a sink, toilet, or shower can easily increase the bathroom renovation costs exponentially. Do this only when it’s absolutely necessary. If you are trying to achieve a specific look, a Menifee, CA bathroom remodeling professional can help you out.

Poor Building Materials

No matter what materials you are purchasing for bathroom remodel in Menifee, CA, make sure that they are highly durable and water resistant. Purchasing inferior materials just to save money will only cost you more in the long haul due to expensive repair or replacement costs.

Ignoring Ventilation

A lack of good ventilation will be unpleasant for your guests, as the bathroom becomes humid and hot after a bath or shower. Zero ventilation also leads to the type of problems you don’t want which are mildew and mold. This will not only complicate things but lead to unwanted expenditures. Always consider proper ventilation during renovation, if there isn’t one. These are some of the most common bathroom remodeling mistakes you should avoid at all costs. Hire an expert professional specialized in bathroom remodel in Menifee, CA for a hassle-free remodel.

Very few things are more calming than soaking your cares away in the bathtub, especially after a tiring day. But if your bathroom is antiquated or is need of general repairs, relaxing is likely the last thing that comes to mind when you envision your bath. If your bathroom doesn’t encapsulate what you wanted when you walk in, it might be time to consider renovating your bathroom. Below are five signs your bath may be in need of a complete makeover.

Small Problems

Your bathroom is one of the most utilized rooms in your home. Shouldn’t everything be in working or operating in order to give you a piece of mind? Archaic, or outdated building materials in your bathroom are not only unappealing but can also be hazardous. Hiring a general contractor will help you identify if your bathroom problems can help determine which are minor or just a nuisance, and some that might be bad for your health.

Outdated

Whether you just moved into a new home or you want to update your current bathroom to match more current trends, if your bathroom design doesn’t match your lifestyle, tastes, cosmetic overhaul can help transform your space into a sanctuary!

Selling Your Home

If you are planning to sell your home in the near future, take an inventory of your bathroom to see what improvements can be made with a remodel. Bathrooms and kitchens are most looked at by potential buyers and an update with a bathtub replacement can go a long way towards a quick sale at your desired price.

More Functional Space

Your bathroom needs will evolve over the years. Whether adding little ones to the family or sending off the older ones to college, when your family dynamics change, bathroom remodels may be in order.

Damage

If part of your bathroom is damaged, whether that’s from water, mold or some other issue, it’s likely time for a remodel. Depending on the damage, your bath update could be as small as a replacement shower enclosure or might involve a complete remodel to counter the existing damage. Is your family contemplating a complete bathroom remodel? You can count on Mitchell Construction and our team to deliver an elegant and luxurious, bathroom remodel. Our team has the knowledge and experience to supersede all of your bathroom remodeling expectations. Contact Mitchell Construction today at (951)226-6201 for a free estimate and in-home consultation.

Here is a quick list of necessities for bathroom remodeling ideas that will help you execute turning your bathroom into a spa-like retreat, Mitchell Construction is here and ready to lend a hand with these useful tips!

Tile

Tile is an essential way to give any bathroom a much-needed makeover. Tile can entirely change the aesthetic and style of the bathroom or provide also a color accent. One way to use tile to peak visual interest is to use accented tiles with moderation. Using a more decorative tile around the bathtub and again behind sink creates unity as well as a splash of visual curiosity. Patterned tiles around a mirror can also serve as a unique frame. Even a very basic tub can be metamorphized with tile. Use basic, inexpensive white ceramic tile as the bulk of the tile surrounding the tub, then add an accent border of another tile, sort of like a mosaic. Though the mosaic tile is a tad more on the expensive side, it is only covering a small area, overall diminishing the amount you need to spend or purchase.

You can also use tile in so many unexpected ways, like running subway tiles vertically for an unexpected twist, or mix and match tile by using a small tile on the lower half of the wall, and a larger, darker tile on the upper half of the wall.

“Visual” Space

Tile can also be used to make a tiny bathroom look larger. Placing a continuing wall or horizontal line of tile in a contrasting color to the rest of the tile will lengthen or elongate your bathroom while giving the optical illusion of more space or depth. In contrast, you can run tile vertically, giving the room a taller appearance.

Other elements can be added and taken away to create more visual space in a small bathroom. For example, installing translucent shower doors will eliminate the visual barrier, increasing the visual scope of the room. Mirrored like surfaces will also add visual space to almost any room. Adding a mirror running the entire length of the vanity wall, or perhaps a mirrored door on your linen closet, will reflect light and make space feel commodious.

Nature Elements

For a more natural look, you will want to merge in as much natural light as achievable. For privacy, frosted or shade windows to prevent anyone from seeing in but still allow light to shine through. If your bathroom is surrounded by interior walls, consider installing a beautiful skylight, which will offer the benefits of a large window but with much-improved privacy. Combine rich woods and neutral colored stone to create a natural feel in your bathroom space. Soothing colors on the wall will give the room a spa-like feel, allowing to you relax like you schedule an appointment for the day spa

Bathroom remodels can add value to your house as well as give you a relaxing and spa-like space. Bathroom remodels, however, can be complex and require the assistance of a professional general contractor like those at Mitchell Construction. If you are considering a bathroom remodel let us help you get your ideas out on paper and then make your dreams come true!

TIMEFRAME

When does this project have to be finished by? Do you have another bathroom in your home to use or are you staying with a friend? If your planning for having another child it could reduce your time frame down to eight weeks for your bathroom remodel. This is important to fully think out so that you can decide what parts of the remodeling project.

WISH LIST

New tile? Lighting? Fixtures? Moving walls? Cabinets? Are adding another beautiful sink? A stand-alone shower? For us, the only thing we saved was the toilet. We did a ton of demolition and even moved a wall back six inches to make room for a stand-alone shower. This list will come in handy for the budget.

INSPIRATION

Start a bathroom remodel Pinterest board and collect ideas that you love. Do you want a drop-in tub? Do you love subway tile? Grout color? Different grout color for walls and floor? What about vanity lights? Stare at tons of pictures and really think about exactly what you love about that image.

MAKE A BUDGET

Also, realize things come up in bathroom remodels, so give yourself plenty of wiggle room within your budget.

FIND HELP?

Do you need someone to move to plumbing? Add lighting? Do you feel comfortable tiling yourself? Countertops? Glass enclosure for the shower? It’s a simple process that you can do online in Google and get immediate responses and schedule folks to give you free bids. There are other free services that provide customer comments on various general contractors, which can help you decide on who to hire.

SPECIAL ORDERING?

If you work with the right custom design team you shouldn’t miss anything! But if you are a DIY there is a chance you will have to make several trips to Home Depot. As long as you are thinking ahead, special orders are no big deal, and you can usually even ship them directly to your home for free!

ALL THE SMALL THINGS

All the small things. Truth care. Truth Brings. “Blink 182” Sorry that song just popped into my head. Where do you want outlets? Where do you need lights? How high do you want the lights? Will you have one three-light wall sconce or two two-light sconces? One or two mirrors? Where do the light switches go? Where will towel racks hang? Cabinet hardware? Do you want a built-in shower and bathtub cabinets? It’s nice to be able to tell the electrician and or plumber ahead of time exactly where you want these things to go.

TILE & FIXTURES

Go to your local Home Depot store and look at the materials in person. Having a Pinterest inspiration board comes in very handy, and take pictures on your phone of what you like in the store. Include prices in the pictures for easy reference later. Also, remember things like smaller tiles equals more grout, which equals a less slippery floor, which was a huge decision maker for our floor tile choice.

DONT STRESS ITS JUST A BATHROOM

Everything is going to be A-OK, I promise. In the end, you’re going to have a brand-spanking’ new bathroom to enjoy and admire for as long as you live in your house! If you’re thinking about starting a bathroom remodel project, do it! It will be awesome. If you’ve already made the decision to remodel, congrats! Now, plan, plan, plan! You will love the finished product! If you’ve recently completed a bathroom remodel, high five, friend! Take a bubble bath and enjoy!

Modern master bathrooms are trending towards an aspiration of self-indulgence. What was originally known as a cramped space has turned into a more functional spa-like retreat. While most bathrooms only need one functioning toilet, sink, tub and or shower. There are numerous other amenities you can add to spruce up your space and make it much more enjoyable for yourself or your guests. Here a must-haves for your next bathroom remodel.

Undermounted Sinks

Most people have the preference of having their own sink just simply based on personal hygiene and what our partner’s definition of a clean bathroom counter space is. Purchasing or investing in double mounted sinks can save a lot of time, money and headaches in your morning routine. They are simply attached to the underside of the countertop and have no raised rim. These sinks do require a water resistant countertop but this feature makes it so much more convenient because there is no lip or trap grime that builds up.

Radiant Heat Floors

Stepping out on to a sub-arctic floor after a hot shower on a cold winters day can be agony. Stepping on to heated floors, however, is like walking into hot folded laundry fresh out the drier. This is a very unconventional and energy efficient way to heat your bathroom. Heated floors can act as an independent electronic thermostat that you can preset before you wake up to provide you warmth during your morning ritual.

Water Closet

An up and coming trend from Europe is to have a separate area dedicated to your royal throne. Although this will require more space it will provide another area of cloaking privacy. Bidets are somewhat obscure to most Americans even though your foreign friends and been using them for centuries. Installed in place of an ordinary toilet seat your commode is now ready for a call of duty.

Motion Activated Sinks & Built-in Hand Soap Dispensers

If you’re a germaphobe or simply have your hands filled while being in your bathroom, having motion activated might be a worthwhile investment. It also may save water or prevent an overflow in a child’s bathroom, should a child leave the water on an unattended. A built-in soap dispenser is another great addition to replace the soapy soap dish.

Curbless Shower

Accessibility into your shower is now becoming a necessity especially for those that want to age with their home. Stepping over a high shower curb or apron of a tub can lead to an injury. Some curbless showers can be sloped so there is no need for a shower door to keep water running on to the floor. Though this may be a little more drafty while showering it will greatly reduce the amount of glass to clean and could be less expensive.

KITCHEN & BATH REMODELING WITH MITCHELL CONSTRUCTION

Tile selection is probably going to have the biggest impact on your bathroom. Your head is going to be spinning with all the options. Should you go with larger or small tile? Solid colors or marble effect? What type of stone? Below we will discuss some of the options we think are best.

Large & Neutral

This is the most cost effective way to go but not necessarily a bad choice. Most bathrooms are light and neutral colored to properly reflect light while you put on make-up or try on clothes. Although installers charge by the square footage and not by tile, large tile mean fewer steps to complete. This should give you less chance of having a few tile offset. For grout, we would recommend going with a color in the same hue but lighter.

Wood Effect

Of course, real wood would likely have issues with the amount of moisture that bathrooms tend to make. Wood effect tile can give you a rustic look to match the rest of your home or to make your bathroom feel more relaxing. Kind of like a sauna. Again, you will be dealing with larger tile sizes but wood effect tile might be harder to find in your area.

Mosaic

Be wary, too much Mosaic becomes overpowering and can make you feel like you are drowning in your bathroom. Well-placed Mosaic is amazing! The best part is that the rest of the walls can simply be inexpensive, white subway tile. White will also work for your grout color. Hardest part of this choice is where it goes and which pattern to choose!

These three styles are great options if your budget needs to make room for other expenses. Tile is a key part of every remodel and should be given enough time to make a sure decision. Remember, you are going to have to look at it everyday!

Bathroom remodeling does not come cheap. Typically cheap isn’t good and good isn’t cheap.

Over the years we have become masters of our craft and students of how to operate within smaller budgets. Mitchell Construction has over 45 years of experience in bathroom remodeling. We thought we would share a few pointers to those millennials, college students or maybe even a daring do it yourself-er type who are operating on a meager budget some professional tips that will help you save you money and time!

Working with existing layout or floor plan

Making major changes can result in thousands of dollars in a bathroom remodeling project. For example sometimes changing the location for a toilet with a sink could add $2000 dollars to your overall cost.

Research Pricing

From the comfort of your own couch and pick up your laptop or tablet and make sure to save model #’s you should be able to discover most of the items by keywords as well. Make sure to include taxes
And of course shipping. You’ll find there are several advantages to shopping online from companies with competitive pricing and some of them offer free shipping which obviously is the way to go.

Craigslist

Been a couple occasions where I have found a couple of vanities being sold by Home Depot for almost half the price in the store. Make sure to look you never know you might find the diamond in the rough.

Paint your Vanity

This could obviously save you $1500-$3000 depending on where you look. But if that isn’t an alternative buy vanities with built in sinks and countertops included.

Buy Tile with Straight Edges

Most people are more drawn to the hex tile but it could result in a few hundred more dollars to install it because it requires more cuts. The cheapest tiles to install are those that have a straight or flat edge. The mesh backed tile is more expensive as well to install because it requires more cuts per sheet as well.

Getting Professional Advice

Home Builders, General Contractors, or designers are all a credible resource of great knowledge.
Feel free to contact Jonathon Mitchell at (951) 226-6201 if you have any questions that pertain to bathroom remodeling.

We took notice of two particular bathroom styles that we saw emerging more and more often. This seemed like the perfect time to show-and-tell a bit about the wonderful world of double vanities and powder rooms.

Double Vanities

For a couple or the whole family in a shared master bathroom, a double vanity could be a lifesaver! No longer would you have to wait on someone else to finish their hair or brush their teeth while you need to do the same. Most double vanities have a focus on storage as well to give the owners room to fit everyone’s amenities.

These vanities have a variety of styles available to them as well including a pair single-sink, tabletop vanities or a countertop with two sinks. Some designs will put the mirror-wall between the two for added privacy. Your possibilities are endless so consider your space and get as many opinions as you can.

Powder Rooms

Alternatively called the “half-bathroom”, these are great for having a restroom near the main living areas of your home or to complete a guest room. Everything about a powder room screams ‘extra’ and ‘essential’ so you only need to keep it at a bare minimum of amenities and features. A toilet and a faucet placed in the right area of a home can go a long way!

The other fun feature of a powder is, because of their small size, you can splurge on decorating and save money since you have less area to cover. A single light fixture will cover the entire room and an expensive tile set will only have so much square footage to meet once you consider the space the vanity and toilet will take up. Since there is no shower, you will never have to deal with damage from condensation but be sure to consider ventilating the room somehow to get rid of odors!

There were many trending photos on Instagram last year that boasted huge glamourous marble or granite countertops most had subway tile with modern brass fixtures, and this year trends in bathroom remodeling are just as bold and elegant.

Modern but minimalist will always be a classic. Less is more. From the scene of things, most designers are leaning towards using texture, loud colors, and obscure accessories. Invision stylish wallpaper with intricate patterns, and contemporary furniture and graphic tile patterns that will turn your space into bathroom into a retreat mini-sanctuary or personal spa. If you’re deciding to overhaul your bathroom or just looking for inspiration these are recent trends to look for.

Dimensional Tile

This trend started over in Europe just a few years back, we now are seeing a lot of possibilities with dimensional tile making which is making waves in the latest designs in bathroom remodeling. The technology of using water jets has made leaps and bounds giving them more creative ways to express themselves and the finished product is amazing. Whether its stone or marble or even a porcelain composite high-quality tiles are crucial to add style while creating a calming atmosphere. In the same way, selecting the right color of paint accompanied with wallpaper will draw a reaction or interest in the room, these tiles with the right pattern can make a very bold statement. Apply these to an accent wall or possibly a vanity not only for looks but for functionality as well, these tiles are the way to go more heavy duty and water resistant. Your bathroom is too important to play it safe and with these new dimensional tiles, you can have a look that will make a statement for your family for years to come.

Freestanding Bathtubs

These tubs have gained a lot of popularity in the last few years and will continue to be trendy in 2018. Freestanding tubs draw you in and provide a central theme or focal point to build off of. If you encase them with marble or granite tiles on a raised platform or deck. The bathtub has evolved in the last decade most homeowners and interior designers are choosing much simpler bathtubs. The right tub can really showcase your bathroom. You could choose a simple soaking design or a jacuzzi type with heated headrest and speakers to listen to your favorite jams. No matter what you choose the tubs in 2018 are sculpture-like and elegant.

Floating Bathroom Vanities

This is another trend that has been prevalent in Europe for many years but finally making it way to the States. The floating vanity creates a sense of space and openness even with the smallest of bathrooms. It offers the clean, transitional look that so many homeowners and home buyers want in a home today. Expect these vanities to offer drawers over doors in many instances, as a way to over more practical storage and, as stated above, smart storage is becoming standard in many of the well-thought-out designs. But while they are stylish, they offer a few practical advantages as well. By its very nature, the vanity can be installed at just about any height. This is great for the homeowner that finds standard height vanities either too tall or too short. Next, by leaving an area of 12-18” open beneath the vanity, it makes for very easy cleaning. Whether you prefer traditional or modern styling, you should consider a floating vanity in your new bathroom design.

Let’s face it. The number one worry you have as a homeowner considering a bathroom remodel is the cost. You know that a good project won’t be cheap and a cheap project won’t be good. Today, we will help you out by giving you a guide to how much updating your bathroom will cost!

Less Than $15,000

Depending on the size, of course, you can expect to pay between $5,000 and $12,000 for a project you handle yourself. This is best when you would not need to rearrange the plumbing or make major flooring changes. Fixtures could be replaced, low-end stone replacements to the countertops, and perhaps tiling the shower are the likely choices for this type of budget. Furnishings like cabinets can be refinished if they are still in good condition. You could always get stock materials and make up for it with accessories and finishing. Combining most of these ideas or opting for more expensive materials will obviously bring you to the higher-end of this cost range.

You can most likely hire a single experienced contractor for a job like this as well and still be under budget or attempt to do it yourself. This is a good range to aim for if you are limited on funds or you plan to resell soon.

$15,000 to $35,000

This is the range we consider when you are looking at replacing a combination the toilet, vanity, sink, lighting, windows, countertops, and framed mirrors. If you were considering some layout adjustments, you could stay within this range assuming they were not too major. Maybe increasing the size of your shower or bathtub or redesigning the vanity or sink area. Plumbing changes start to open up as options as long as you don’t plan to move the toilet to another spot. That kind of change can get expensive quickly and even require permits. For those who don’t have layout changes in mind, you can opt for semi-customized cabinetry, higher-grade stone for countertops, and more luxurious fixtures. We would recommend upgrading to porcelain tile if you are in this range. It is more durable, slip-resistant, and has much more color, size, and pattern options than ceramic.

This range will likely require a team possibly including a designer if you need help. Painters, plumbers, tile-setters, and perhaps an electrician will be needed. We would recommend this range if you do not plan to sell anytime soon but want it as an option.

$30,000 And Beyond

If you are here, you are going in for the kill. This is complete remodel territory. This is what you should expect when you plan to essential take everything out and put it back in the way you want. Now it would be easy to say you can have “anything you want” in an unlimited budget situation but on the closer to $30,000 mark will be marble or granite tile, solid wood cabinetry, and high-end plumbing jobs. Closer to $60,000 would be steam showers, heated floors, and custom-built fixtures. With enough room, you could invest in a double-vanity or possibly a separate shower and tub.

Depending on the scope of your work, you may need permits, inspections and more to meet your desires. Expect to speak with a full range of subcontractors and specialists and not to have access to the bathroom for several weeks.

It should be noted that the bulk of your funds will go to the installation fees and purchasing the larger parts like cabinets, plumbing, and fixtures. Everything else will cost you about half of that so you can begin shopping around for what you want and then double it for what you will need.
